How to read barcode print quality grades

"It can be scanned" and "grade qualified" are two different things. The scanner at the store being able to scan it does not mean it can still be scanned when the goods reach another channel.

Executive summary:This article explains the meaning and constituent parameters of barcode symbol grades, the relationship between grades and actual read rates, common failure reasons, and how companies should schedule testing points and methods.
01

What is a symbol grade

Barcode print quality is not a subjective impression, but a composite score obtained by measuring a set of standard parameters with dedicated inspection equipment, commonly referred to as the symbol grade. The parameters measured include edge determination (print sharpness), contrast (symbol contrast), modulation ratio (module consistency), degree of defects and blemishes, and decodability. A grade is then derived from the composite calculation; the higher the grade, the greater the margin for stable reading across various devices and environments.

02

Why you cannot just look at "whether it can be scanned"

A single scanner being able to read a symbol under ideal conditions only shows that it is usable under those conditions; it does not mean it has any quality margin. There are many variables in actual circulation: checkout devices of different brands and models, different scanning distances and angles, in-store lighting conditions, and slight wear on packaging during transport. A symbol with a passing grade is one that can still be read stably when these variables are combined.

03

Common causes of failure

In practice, the most frequent problems are concentrated in:1.Insufficient contrast (improper color scheme or ink spread);II.Blurred edges (insufficient printing precision, ink absorption by the substrate, misregistration);III.Module width deviation (magnification factor below the standard lower limit or plate-making error);IV.Defects and blemishes (the barcode area affected by patterns, ink splatter, or electrostatic dust);V.Insufficient quiet zone (the design extended patterns into the clear area at the design stage).

04

What companies should do

It is recommended to schedule inspection at three points in time:①After plate-making and proofing (to verify that the design and plate-making are correct);②When the first print run is completed (to verify performance under actual printing conditions);③When changing printers, substrates, or processes (re-verification is required once conditions change). Inspection can be entrusted to a professional institution, or you can ask the printer to provide inspection data; either way, you must obtain reviewable measurement results, not verbal conclusions.

Key points at a glance

Key conclusions that can be excerpted directly.

Point 01

The grade is a composite score

Derived from multiple parameters such as edge, contrast, modulation ratio, and defects.

Point 02

Scannable ≠ Grade Qualified

Reading successfully with a single scanner under ideal conditions does not mean there is quality margin.

Point 03

High-frequency failures fall into these five categories

Contrast, edges, module width, damage, quiet zone.

Key Point 04

Testing is required at three points in time

After proofing, after the first print run, and after changing conditions.

Terminology explanation

The proper nouns involved in this article.

Symbol grade

A grade that comprehensively evaluates barcode print quality according to standard parameters.

Contrast / symbol contrast

The reflectance difference between bars and background, which is a fundamental parameter for reading.

Modulation ratio

A parameter that measures the consistency of module width, reflecting printing uniformity.

Decodability

The conditions and number of attempts required for the symbol to actually be read by a decoder.

Related Q&A

The printing plant says it scanned fine, so is verification still needed?+
It is advisable to request verifiable measurement data. Test-scanning with a single barcode scanner is a functional check, which is not the same as quality grade evaluation.
If the grade passes, does that mean there is definitely no problem?+
A passing grade means there is more quality margin, but actual reading is also affected by the usage environment and equipment. The grade is a necessary condition, not the whole condition.
How often should testing be done?+
There is no fixed time interval; it follows changes in conditions: whenever you change printers, materials, processes, or packaging structures, revalidation should be performed.
Do I have to go through an agent for this?+
It is not mandatory. You can apply directly to the corresponding member organization; the value of an agent lies in selecting the number range, arranging the numbers, checking materials, and managing the continuity of subsequent changes and renewals. Whether to entrust this depends on your time cost.
Can the numbers in the content be used directly?+
The barcodes appearing in the text are all demonstration numbers generated according to GS1 rules. The structure is valid, but they do not belong to any company. Do not use them directly for real products; official codes must be arranged by yourself according to the code segment obtained through registration.
How long until I get a result?+
Acceptance periods vary among member organizations. This site does not provide unconfirmed commitments regarding the number of days. After you submit your request, a coding consultant will update the milestones according to the current acceptance progress.
