ITF-14 Barcode · 14-digit Outer Case Logistics Code

Inside the box is EAN-13, outside the box is ITF-14. The outer box code writes "how many individual items are in one box" and "which batch this box belongs to" into 14 digits, enabling warehouse, sorting, and logistics systems to identify the entire box.

Management Organization and System Background

Who manages this coding system

What ITF-14 carries is GTIN-14(14 digits), used to identifylogistics units such as outer boxes and pallets, and packaging containing multiple items, and is not used for retail individual item checkout. Its symbol form isInterleaved 2 of 5, which is completely different from the symbol structure of EAN-13.

Our role:Bangma International is the "most trustworthy member unit" of the Hong Kong, International, and China product coding associations, and asan association member organizationprovides agency application services for enterprises. We do not represent any official institution, and enterprises may also apply directly to member organizations.

Where it is read

Warehouse sorting

Outer boxes and pallets

Whole-box inbound, picking, and outbound scanning, without unpacking item by item

Logistics transportation

Carriage and handover

Cargo volume is recorded in box units on waybills and handover documents

Channel supply

Supermarkets and e-commerce warehouses

Supply specifications usually require outer boxes to have a scannable box code

Code structure and parameters

ITF-14 carries a 14-digit GTIN-14, which has one more digit (the packaging indicator) than a retail code, and its symbol structure also changes from the EAN series to Interleaved 2 of 5.

CompositionNumber of digitsMeaning
Packaging indicator1 digitIndicates the packaging level (such as a single carton, a full pallet, etc.), assigned by the enterprise according to internal rules
Company prefix + item reference12 digitsA combination of the company code segment allocated by the member organization and the case product code
Check digit1 digitCalculated using the mod10 algorithm, used for machine-readable verification
Symbol formInterleaved 2 of 5Digits are encoded in interleaved pairs of bars and spaces, with specified requirements for the wide-to-narrow ratio and magnification factor
Object

Outer cartons rather than individual items

ITF-14 identifies packaging units containing multiple items, while individual items still use EAN-13/UPC-A.

Structure

14 digits = indicator + 12 digits + check digit

The first digit, the packaging indicator, indicates the packaging level and can distinguish a single carton, a full pallet, etc.

Symbol

Interleaved 2 of 5, requires a wide-to-narrow ratio

Printed according to the unit width; the wide-to-narrow ratio and dimensions have specified requirements, see the diagram scope below for details.

Four types of application matters

A barcode is not something that is done once and then finished — when company information changes, when the right to use the codes needs to be maintained, or when the business is transferred, the corresponding procedures must be handled.

New application: obtain codes from scratch

STEP 01

Confirm requirements

Case product category, packaging level (single carton / full pallet), estimated number of case SKUs

STEP 02

Prepare documents

Prepare according to the registration documents of the location of the applying entity; see the checklist on the right

STEP 03

Submission and review

Submit the application to the GS1 member organization and wait for the company prefix to be assigned

STEP 04

Assignment and use

After obtaining the code segment, assign a GTIN-14 to each case product according to the packaging indicator rules

Commonly used document checklist

  • Full set of company registration documents (certificate of incorporation / business registration certificate, etc., depending on the local entity type)
  • Director's phone number and email
  • ID documents of directors and shareholders
  • Registration form (provided by our company; in some countries/regions it is actually not required)
The document checklist is subject to the current requirements of the member organization; during business coordination, each item will be checked one by one to avoid repeated supplementary submissions.

Change: when company information changes, it must be updated accordingly

The following situations require a change:

  • Change of enterprise name
  • Change of registered address
  • Change of legal representative / director
  • Change of contact information
Risks of not changing in time: the coding information is inconsistent with the registered information, which may be questioned during channel review or filing, affecting listing.

Key points for handling

Point 01

Handle with change certificate

A change certificate issued by the local registration authority must be provided

Point 02

The code itself remains unchanged

The company prefix remains unchanged; only the enterprise information in the system is updated

Point 03

Handling of packaging inventory

Already printed packaging can usually continue to be used, with no need to reprint the barcode graphic

Renewal: usage rights need to be maintained

Member organizations differ in how they maintain code usage rights (annual membership fee system or validity period renewal system), subject to the current policy of that member organization. If not maintained on time, the code may be suspended or reclaimed, and the normal circulation of goods in channels will be affected.

It is recommended to 3 monthsbefore expiration, initiate renewal to avoid interruption caused by material preparation or system processing time.

Reminder services we provide

  • Registration and reminders for barcode expiry dates
  • Renewal document verification and submission on your behalf
  • Confirmation of barcode status after renewal
  • Unified ledger management for barcodes across multiple markets

Customers who have already processed through Bangma International can register for expiry reminders free of charge.

Transfer: barcodes transfer together with the business

During mergers and acquisitions, brand transfers, or business restructuring, the company prefix can be transferred as an asset together with the business. The transfer requires a joint application by both parties and completion of changes to entity information and ownership.

After the transfer is completed, the original company may no longer continue to use that barcode segment; packaging already printed with that barcode requires a corresponding handling plan.

Applicable scenarios

  • Integration of brands and product lines after mergers and acquisitions
  • The brand owner transfers barcode assets to a contract manufacturer or licensee
  • Disposal of barcode assets before company deregistration
  • Change of entity for cross-border e-commerce

Fees and turnaround time

Fee composition

The total fee usually includes: the barcode service fee charged by the member organization (based on tier and number of years) + agency service fee. Factors affecting the fee:

  • The number of case product SKUs and the complexity of packaging levels
  • Processing period / membership tier
  • Whether unified planning with the individual item codes inside the case is needed
  • Whether outer carton printing and actual measurement support are needed
Fees to be confirmed by our business teamWe do not provide general quotations. After you submit your requirements, a coding consultant will give you a clear plan and a detailed fee breakdown based on your actual situation.

Timeline reference

New application

Subject to the member organization's processing progress

Once all documents are complete, the review and allocation process begins; timelines vary by country

Change / renewal

Usually faster than a new application

No new code allocation is involved, so the process is relatively simple

Transfer

Requires cooperation from both parties

Involves ownership confirmation; the timeline depends on how prepared both parties' materials are

The above is a description of the process sequence and does not fabricate specific numbers of days. The actual timeline is subject to the accepting organization's current announcements and processing progress, and we will keep you updated at every stage during the process.

Common questions about ITF-14 outer carton barcodes

Is ITF-14 mandatory? Is it acceptable to print only EAN-13?+
Depends onChannel supply specifications. For boxed supply to supermarkets, e-commerce warehouses, and logistics distribution centers, the outer carton is usually required to carry a scannable carton code (GTIN-14). Whether it is mandatory is determined by the channel's requirements; we do not make that judgment on your behalf and defer to the channel's current specifications.
Why is the outer carton barcode often difficult to scan?+
The most common reason is that thewide-to-narrow ratio does not meet specifications: ITF is a wide-narrow bar encoding. If it is printed as equal-width thin bars, or the wide-to-narrow ratio is compressed too small, the scanning device cannot distinguish wide from narrow and will refuse to read it. In addition, ink absorption by corrugated cardboard, printing deformation, and insufficient magnification factor can also affect reading. Post-print testing is recommended.
Are the 14 digits of ITF-14 the same number as the 13 digits of the individual item inside the carton?+
No. The carton code is an independently assigned 14-digit number, in which the first digit is a packaging indicator representing the packaging level; the middle 12 digits may correspond to the item code inside the carton, making it easier for the system to trace "which product is packed in this carton," but the two are different codes.
Are there any special requirements for printing outer carton barcodes?+
ITF-14 is a wide-narrow bar encoding, and is more sensitive than EAN-13 to thewide-to-narrow ratio and magnification factor: if the wide-to-narrow ratio does not meet specifications, or it is printed as equal-width thin bars, the scanning device will be unable to recognize it at all. In addition, outer cartons are often printed directly on corrugated cardboard, and ink absorption and deformation can both affect reading. Post-print testing is recommended.
